Create/Elevate | Harewood Biennial | Exhibition | 2024
with Darren Pih
Create/Elevate was the third Harewood Biennial that showcased the work of sixteen international artists, designers and craft collectives, including four new commissions. The exhibition, set across Harewood House and Gardens, explored the power of craft and art to inspire and bring people together to imagine new worlds.
Through three interwoven themes, the biennial addressed how artists, designers and makers work with craft as a continuum, as collaboration and cross-generational knowledge sharing that is generous, and the foundation of most things we know, use and value. New Narratives included works that interrogate Harewood's collections and history. Local and global ecologies were foregrounded in The Use of Land, and the convivial effects of sharing food and knowledge were explored in Nourish.
Craft is rooted in the art and heritage of Harewood House and the selection of narrative-rich contemporary objects opened histories and inform and inspire new stories within the house and gardens. The works, embedded throughout the house and landscape, also encourage new ways to engage with the environment of a historic house; actively, playfully and multi-sensorially.
Exhibiting artists and makers include: Arabeschi di Latte, BEIT Collective, Botanique Studios, Britto Arts Trust, Rebecca Chesney, Emefa Cole, Common Threads, Jakup Ferri, Rosa Harradine, Jan Hendzel, Mani Kambo, Hew Locke, Modular by Mensah, Temitayo Ogunbiyi, Lucia Pizzani and Xanthe Somers.
The exhibition was curated by Ligaya Salazar and Darren Pih
